In this article, a modal control state feedback design is used in an air-conditioning system, i.e. to regulate the two outputs, namely the temperature and relative humidity by searching the best combination of three control inputs such as heater, chiller and humidifier that gives minimal overall power consumption. The design utilizes the mode controllability matrix for a set of desired poles at each stage to determine the number of modes to be controlled by each control loop. The input matrix B in state-space equation is partitioned into its elemental column vectors in order to obtain the gain vector gi of the feedback matrix F = - in which it has 6 permutations from the 3 control inputs. The result has shown that this design has superior performance as compared to the ordinary pole-placement design, since the best sequence of the control inputs shall be considered that fall in their ranges only at steady state conditions.
