Waste quantities are still increasing rapidly worldwide. Against the background of the importance of waste management for resource protection, but especially for climate protection and the protection of aquatic systems, these figures are alarming. The inadequate handling of waste has serious negative effects, especially in developing and emerging countries. More than 80% of the pollution of the world's oceans, for example, can be traced back to improper waste management, primarily from these countries. According to rough estimates, waste-related greenhouse gas emissions here account for 8 to 12% of total country-specific climate-impacting emissions. Knowledge of the waste sources, the waste amount and its composition is the fundamental building block for the development and implementation of a sustainable waste management. It forms the data basis of almost all waste management planning instruments. While countries in Central Europe have comparatively extensive and reliable data on waste quantities and their composition, this is not the case at all for developing and newly industrializing countries. The reasons for this lack of available data are complex. One reason, according to our own assessment, is the lack of a methodology adapted to the specific framework conditions for determining waste quantities and qualities, including strategical forecast models. The aim of the present dissertation is to develop and provide a reliable method for the determination of data on waste quantities and qualities, especially for developing and newly industrializing countries, or for countries with a waste management system that is not existing or only poorly developed. The development of the methodology is based on the example of Brazil, with a high potential for know-how transfer to other Latin American countries. The first priority criterion was the provision of valid, consistent and representative data. In addition, the method should be highly user-friendly, an important requirement for efficient application in developing ...
