uCARE aims to reduce pollutant emissions of the existing European vehicle fleet. The project intends to inform drivers about how to change their behaviour in such a way that tailpipe and wear emissions are reduced. To determine possible reductions, one needs to understand how emissions are related to vehicle use. There is much to be learned from how vehicle emissions are related to use, but to do so emission data must be stored, characterised and distributed. We propose an emission map concept with which the relationship between the use of a vehicle and experiment-based emission data can be described in a logical and structured way, be it in the form of a map or in the form of a function. Maps or functions can be created on any level of the earlier proposed vehicle taxonomy (see uCARe deliverable D1.1), dependent on distinctiveness and availability of data. The emission maps or functions can be stored, characterised and distributed via the file exchange format proposed here. The naming of these files is based on an abbreviation of the earlier proposed taxonomy variables. The file itself contains meta-information about a vehicle or engine, as well as at least one emission map. Various other layers/augmentation maps can be included in the emission map file. The dimensions of each map can vary for each layer, dependent on which parameters best describe the emission behaviour. To handle a varying data availability among vehicle types or engine types, maps also have a flexible resolution. The map resolution selected complies to minimum standards in terms of coverage.
