The present research presents a stylistic analysis of I. Asimov’s short science-fiction story collection I, Robot. The research argues, that the robots in the collection are assigned consciousness, which is done by the means of using metaphorical expressions and various lexical elements such as pronouns, nominal reference, verbs and adjectives/adverbs, thus a megametaphor ROBOT is HUMAN is established. The analysis is executed by combining Metaphor Identification Procedure (MIP, Pragglejaz Group, 2007), theory of conceptual metaphor analysis (Lakoff, 1993; Steen, 2009; Kövecses, 2010) and the method of classification of stylistic devices proposed by Short and Leech (1981) to showcase the extreme anthropomorphization of robots in the narrative. The results are interpreted through the theory of consciousness, as proposed by posthumanists, and act as evidence to support the claim that Asimov does, indeed, exploit the extended metaphor ROBOT is HUMAN throughout the collection.
