In order to obtain the information of passengers’ public transit transfer behavior, by refining the time-space evolution of public transit transfer process, and utilizing vehicle GPS data and smart card data fusion techniques, this paper calculates the boarding time and alighting time of passengers. Then, principles including transfer distance threshold, transfer time threshold, and bus arriving time matching are used to identify public transit transfer behavior with the method of layers screening. Compared with existing methods, transfer recognition by the above-mentioned method takes more factors into consideration and is more accurate. Finally, four continuous public transit travel records of an actual passenger from Foshan are selected as an example to verify the practicality and efficiency of the method. Results show that the above algorithms can effectively recognize public transit transfer behaviors including transfer inside one station and transfer between different stations. The recognition method can provide data support for planning and management of public transit network, hub location, and public transportation system efficiency improvement.
