Fast-moving vehicles and complex road environments impose some new requirements on wireless access systems in vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication systems. Fast moving vehicles should establish connections with roadside equipment in a very short time for safety applications as well as non-safety communication and multi-media services. IEEE 802.11p, improved from IEEE 802.11 standard for solving wireless communication problems between vehicles and roadside equipment, serves as a promising wireless access protocol dedicatedly used in vehicular environment. In this paper, an overview of IEEE 802.11p has been made and its access strategy has been studied from the media access control (MAC) layer to the physical (PHY) layer in detail.
