Nowadays, with the urbanization of the cities, traffic is becoming a severe problem. An efficient traffic signal control strategy is beneficial for improving the efficiency of the traffic. With the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and intelligent vehicle infrastructure cooperation systems (IVICS), it is possible to improve the traffic performance by implementing real-time and accurate traffic information. This paper proposes an innovative algorithm based on game theory to control traffic signal for single intersection in real time. By utilizing the theory of mixed strategies, Nash equilibrium, an optimum signal timing plan for the isolated intersection can be achieved. Finally, this game theory-based traffic signal timing model is simulated on the VISSIM platform. Compared with the fixed time signal control system, the new signal timing algorithm shows improvement in the intersection traffic performance through reducing the average queue length and therefore improving the effectiveness of signal control.
