With the increasing pressure of left-turn vehicles in urban arterials, multiple phases of signal control are chosen as the main pattern. Four intersections of an arterial in Qingdao city are selected as the main object of study. Each intersection is four-legged with a two-way eight-lane major street and two-way four-lane minor street. Four patterns of phases and sequence are researched including two-phase control, Split Phasing, leading left-turn phasing and lagging left-turn phasing in major street. 1024 simulation tests are designed by using PASSER software. Average delay of each vehicle is calculated by using the hill-climbing method. The optimized results of different combined phases and sequences with 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% left-turn volume are given as the base of arterial coordination control of local agency.
