The entrance and exit (E&E) of a tunnel are typical crash prone segments. Thus, this paper is focused on exploring the influence range of the traffic risk at the tunnel E&E. Furthermore, the accident spatial distribution characteristics of the E&E are also studied to discover the accident mechanism. Driving risk characteristics of the E&E segments have been studied by analyzing the traffic speed/visual adaptability and accident distribution statistics. The study was carried out on the 2,552 traffic accidents of 41 tunnels of different lengths in Guangdong Province. Segments 200 m before and after the E&E were found the influence range of the traffic risk at the tunnel E&E. Furthermore, cubic polynomial curve was found suitable to describe the spatial distribution law of the traffic risk at tunnel E&E. The research results can provide a basis for the safety optimization design and safety management of tunnel openings.
