In this paper a probabilistic study is reported on the estimation of maintenance cost of a mixed railway fleet. The interest for this field has been suddenly risen up in Italy with the up coming of the privatisation process, as it has already happened in other European countries. In fact in order to participate to tenders, transport companies need to know Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of new vehicles, which includes not only the investment and operation costs (deterministic) but even the maintenance ones (probabilistic) which depends on RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability) parameters. Results show how to take into consideration most of these parameters to develop a cost estimation model of maintenance into the general expressions of vehicles life cycle cost.
