This study conducted a survey at the work zone located at Beigongdaximen Station of subway line 14 in Beijing. The survey included traffic flow, time headway, and speed. Comparing two types of road work zones (occupying and non-occupying opposite lanes), this paper analyzes the characteristics of traffic flow and traffic impact in these two types. The research results show that work zones have a certain influence on traffic flow and vehicle speed. The traffic organization for work zones which occupy an opposite lane has less influence on vehicle speed than the one which does not occupy an opposite lane. The traffic impact for providing variable message signs around road work zones was analyzed based on traffic planning and simulation software, TransCAD and DYNASMART. The results show obvious and positive effect for drivers given the variable message board, especially when displaying proposed speed and optional detours.
