Discerning free driving from car-following state is an important issue in modeling driver's longitudinal behavior. Existing studies suggested that there is a turning point for correlation coefficient of leading and following vehicles' speed between free driving and car-following states. In this paper, by applying the adopted method to trajectory data, a longer 12 s time gap threshold between free driving and car-following is reported. Also a notable difference across experienced and beginner driver groups is found. This study could provide some evidence on driver behavior heterogeneity, and also raise the doubt for a universal "free" vehicle standard.
