Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, there is an increased focus on the performance of major bridges' resistance to progressive collapse. On the basis of review of two failure events of cable-stayed bridges, the progressive collapse of cable-stayed bridges is discussed. It is firstly decided whether the available design methods, such as providing specific local resistance of key elements, alternative load paths and structural segmentation, can be used for cable-stayed bridges. Then detailed analysis guidelines and recommendations for static analysis method and dynamic analysis method of loss of cable cases (i.e. alternative load path design method) suggested by Recommendations for Stay Cable Design, Testing and Installation (PTI, 2001) are presented.
