This paper proposes a dynamic control strategy and switch method for the operation of reversible lanes on freeways, bridges, or tunnels. Five traffic situations were defined considering different traffic saturations on each direction. Average delay of all the vehicles on the road were used to develop operation models or reversible lanes under different states. The proposed method were designed for both one and multiple reversible lane with continuous flows. Enumeration algorithm were used to solve the optimization models. A dynamic switching method of driving direction at reversible lane were proposed using variable lane marks and lane direction indicative signals on gantries under vehicle-to-infrastructure communication system. The proposed methods and models were simulated and tested using data of a five lanes bridge in Guangzhou via microscopic traffic simulation. The results show that the proposed method and models were able to reduce the average delay and traffic congestion on studied road section.
