For quantifying the energy consumption and carbon emission of maintenance activities during the asphalt pavement operation phase, a calculation method based on the life cycle assessment theory was proposed. Two asphalt pavement maintenance strategies, traditional maintenance strategy including rehabilitation and reconstruction treatments, and active maintenance strategy including rehabilitation, reconstruction, and several preventive maintenance treatments were compared in a 40 year cycle analysis period. The results showed that active pavement maintenance strategy compared with the traditional maintenance strategy, it was more environmentally friendly. The environmental burden like energy consumption and carbon emission were much less under active pavement maintenance strategy.
