This paper is reporting the results of an improvement plan for urban freight transportation system of pickup vehicles (called Vanets) in the city of Qazvin, Iran. The objectives were to depict the current situation of the system and to provide appropriate suggestions to improve its performance through the reduction of unnecessary movements of vanets with the minimum socio-economic and environmental impacts. Based on an extensive data collection and analysis, it proposed to construct several terminals and stations both in and around a restricted zone. This would concentrate urban and suburban freight transportation activities as well as preventing cruises of vanets. The evaluation of the plan suggested a significant reduction of non-profitable cruises of the vanets and decreased fuel consumption by 30% as well as a promising urban environmental improvement.
