This paper presents an experimental design method, the so called 2k-p fractional factorial design, which is applied for the sensitivity analysis of the parameters of PARAMICS (a traffic simulation software) for simulating freeway traffic. Based on detailed vehicle-by-vehicle toll data at each toll plaza, the freeway from Guangzhou to Shenzhen, China, was simulated in PARAMICS. The sensitivity analysis results show that not only the mean target headway and mean reaction time are identified as the sensitive parameters by engineering judgment or experience in the freeway calibration, but also the simulation step and the aggressive distribution have significantly affected simulation accuracy for simulating the freeway.
