Facing limited road space resources, as opposite to the increasing use of motor vehicles and difficult management on urban road traffic order, effective use of urban road resources are particularly important. For the high-density network, the frequent road intersections which make the vehicle speed limited as well as the improvement of vehicle performance and the drop of vehicle mixing rate, make the driving requirement for lane width decreased; On condition that road capacity and traffic safety are ensured, the appropriate cut of lane-width will do well to not only the full use of limited road resources and better traffic regulation, but also to the easy traffic management and the cut of project cost. This paper searches for theoretical foundation by comparing the lane-width of domestic and international typical urban roads and studying successful cases of domestic driveways improvement. Meanwhile this paper uses improved Bolankerf model which computes with float car data to consider reasonable lane-width for some secondary arterial roads and branch roads in Shanghai.
