Two reconstructed guardrail systems are developed to enhance the crashworthiness of in-service W-beam barriers installed on freeways. The interaction mechanism of vehicle and barriers in the collision process is simulated based on finite element method, and the simulation results are examined by safety performance evaluation criteria. Simulation results show that the three-beam system is successfully crash tested to grade-A conditions with 160kJ kinetic energy. The double W-beam system passes the grade-SB test while the kinetic energy is 280kJ. In all tests, vehicles don't penetrate, under-ride, or over-ride the test barriers after collisions and occupant ride-down accelerations of test cars are all less than 20g, which satisfies the evaluation criteria limits. In the two reconstructed guardrail systems, most of components in the original W-beam barriers could be reused. Compared with installing new barriers of the same test level, applying the two reconstructed guardrail systems can obviously reduce construction cost and decrease traffic influence.
