In this research, a driving simulator experiment was created to test young driver responsiveness to near-collision scenarios with and without a variety of collision warnings. The young driver subjects were separated into the classification of high school or college students. During the approximately 5-min-long experiment on a four-lane arterial roadway, subjects encountered six near-collision scenarios (three with vehicles in their lane and three with vehicles lane-changing into their lane). With each near-collision scenario, no warning or one of five collision warnings is triggered, with the order randomly selected for each subject. The five types of warnings tested include auditory warning, auditory warning with non-informative symbolic visual warning, auditory warning with informative symbolic visual warning, auditory warning with non-informative alphanumeric visual warning, and auditory warning with informative alphanumeric visual warning. Results from this exploratory analysis show that different groups of drivers respond better to some warning systems than other warning systems.
