This paper describes research into integrating traffic micro-simulation models with driving simulators. It is hypothesized that the integration will improve the representation of individual vehicles in traffic simulation models by giving control of an individual vehicle to a test driver in the driving simulator. At the same time, the ambient traffic in the driving simulator that is encountered by the test driver will be improved as the traffic micro-simulation model controls the movement of each vehicle. The integration methodology is described and the potential benefits of the integration are discussed within the context of research on the passing maneuver.
