To explore the car-following behavior characteristics of drivers in the merging area of the freeway, which are influenced by the traffic flow characteristics, and their behavior differences due to different interferences, and based on the vehicle trajectory data mining from a video taken in the merging area of freeway, 11 characteristic parameters which represent the car-following state are extracted. The behavior characteristics of 48 car-following drivers are analyzed by PSO-KM algorithm from three aspects of speed stability, tendency of car-following behavior, and lateral position stability. The differences of following behaviors of drivers in each lane and their causes are analyzed. It is of great significance to understand the inherent relationship among the behavior characteristics among drivers, the special characteristics of traffic flow and the traffic safety risks, and to carry out further research on the accident risk assessment of the merging area of freeway.
