Based on mixture mass change in water and scattering loss in alternate freeze-thaw process, anti-freezing capability of mixture is discussed, with the mechanism of asphalt mixture mass change and strength reducing analyzed in this paper. The test results show that the optimal bitumen content is 6.0 % 6.5 % as determined by mass change in water before and after the freeze-thaw test with that of 6.5% as determined by mass scattering loss in alternate freeze-thaw process. From test results, 6.3% is regarded as optimal bitumen content adapted to lower temperature regions, the optimal bitumen content is very close to asphalt content used in Qing-Hai Tibet highway.
