The Electro Discharge Machining process (EDM) is capable of producing complex geometrical features with high precision in hardened materials. This characteristic has made the process attractive for the manufacture of high precision micro components. The present study explores the use of LeadZirconate-Titanate (PZT), piezoceramic actuators to control the motion of a micro EDM electrode holder, with the goal of producing a spark with a specific voltage at a target frequency. A mechanical displacement stage delivers a coarse displacement for the electrode holder, while a PZT actuator produces fine positioning and mechanical vibration needed to facilitate flushing. The proposed arrangement provides a robust alternative for accurate control of the micro EDM process.
