Nowadays, the electric bicycle has become a main traffic mode in people's daily life. By conducting a questionnaire survey on electric bicycle users in Shanghai, we analyzed its trip characteristics and compared it with the bicycle and public transit. The main results follow. Electric bicycles are mostly used for commuting, and the average distance and time are 9.5 km and 27.3 minutes. "Saving time, bus inconvenience, comfort, saving money and convenience" are the main reasons why users choose electric bicycles. Bicycles and public transit are similar to the electric bicycle in trip purpose, but trip distance and trip time are different. The average trip distance of a bicycle is less than 4 km, and the bicycle is suitable for short distance trips. Public transit and the electric bicycle resemble each other in trip distance. There is greater competition between the two modes for middle and long distance trips, but public transit is more suitable for long distance trips.
