Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) designed, built and commissioned a state-of-the-art Automated People Mover (APM) System for the New Hong Kong International Airport Constructed at Chek Lap Kok to replace the former Kai Tak Airport. The APM began passenger service on July 6, 1998, the day that the New Airport opened. The operation and maintenance of the APM system has also been undertaken by MHI under contract to the Airport Authority of Hong Kong (AAHK). Over the first two years of operation there have been no accidents and no major service disruptions thus achieving an availability of more than 99.9%. A distinctive feature of the Hong Kong International Airport APM, when compared to other systems of similar size, is the small, compact operation and maintenance organization that has been executed by MHI.
