To contain mass casualty accidents in road transport, this paper analyzes the cases of grievous road traffic accidents in which the number of deaths exceeds ten in China from 2004 to 2009. First, the main causes of the accident were statistically analyzed with a set of significant variables which were chosen from accident-inducing factors by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Second, some aspects of multiple-vehicle and single-vehicle accidents, such as accident form, road type, and road alignment, were further investigated. The results show that bus-truck crashes in multiple-vehicle accidents account for a large proportion of such accidents and occur mostly on the national and provincial trunk highways. In 139 single-vehicle accidents, the highest frequency of accident form is vehicle-falling, followed by overturn. Finally, the paper puts forward corresponding improvement programs on vehicle-falling accidents and bus-truck crashes.
