Criminal activity has become a major factor hampering the efficient and effective operation of mass transit systems in the metropolitan areas of South Africa. A number of such incidents have recently afflicted public transport systems in South Africa. Potential socio-economic and theoretical reasons are presented that could give rise to such activity against mass transit systems. Potential strategies encouraging community ownership of public assets are then discussed. Two key recommendations of the paper are that; there must be continuous empowerment of commuters and improvement in the level of service being offered to commuters. The paper concludes by stating that; only when commuters feel that they are indeed being respected as an asset to the transport provider can public transport ownership by the community be leveraged to society's benefit.
