In China, the urban spatial expansion and new city construction are accelerated by the quick process of motorization and urbanization. Construction of regional transportation systems will influence land use patterns, housing, and employment distribution in any metropolitan area. Accessibility will have a direct impact on levels of growth and economic activity. Studying and learning from the transportation plans developed by other metropolitan cities throughout the world that have successfully addressed problems like traffic jams, fatalities, and pollution can help China successfully develop solutions to these same problems. Comprehensive transportation plans from 35 international metropolitan areas were reviewed and studied. Their plans, goals, and strategies were organized systematically. The current situation of urban transportation development in China was analyzed and suggestions were proposed for developing comprehensive transportation plans based on previous plans.
