Few who met Leif Johan "Jack" Sverdrup failed to be impressed by the strength of his personality and his drive to achieve. Born in Norway in 1898, he came to the U.S. in 1914 and within three years, was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and an American citizen. After discharge, he enrolled in the University of Minnesota and earned a degree in civil engineering. During his student days, he was a member of the Civil Engineering Society, a predecessor to ASCE's Student Chapters.
