In this paper, we investigate the impact of the number of lanes on traffic characteristics upon empirical study. It turns to the findings that flow and speed per lane decreases marginally with increasing number of lanes on uninterrupted expressway segments. Further it addresses that the increase of lane-changing probability is the principal factor of the marginal decrease of flow and speed. The results of the researches are the background support that tends to revise the Highway Capacity Manuals, optimize planning and design of road network, and improve supervision and control of city traffic network.
