Understanding car-following behavior is crucial in determining highway capacity, level of service, and safety. It is also the foundation for traffic simulation models that are commonly used today for traffic management. In the past, the car-following experiments were mostly conducted under controlled environment with only two vehicles. This research investigates the car-following behavior based on experiments consisting of three vehicles. The position and speed of each vehicle were recorded at one-second intervals by a high-power GPS receiver, based on which the distance headway between the vehicles as well as the acceleration rate of each vehicle were computed. Since the experiment was conducted on urban streets and freeways with the normal traffic, the data analysis has revealed the realistic car-following behavior that can help to better understand today's complex traffic flow characteristics.
