Struts are used to inject fuel into the core region of scramjet combustion chambers for enhanced combustion. An inclined porous transpiration-cooled strut was designed and tested in a wind tunnel with a Mach number of 2.5, a total temperature of 1774 K, and a duration of 50 s. Five thermocouples were welded on the bottom of the strut to monitor the temperature variations. Methane was injected into the porous strut as coolant at a pressure of 3.4 MPa and blowing ratio of 2.8%; the highest measured temperature on the bottom of the strut was approximately 475 K. RP3 aviation kerosene was injected into the porous strut through six 0.4-mm-diam injection holes at a pressure of 3.0 MPa and total blowing ratio of 12.2%. The strut was adequately protected by transpiration cooling with no obvious oxidation observed on the strut surface after the test. The simulation results correspond reasonably with experimental data, which demonstrate that the highest temperature on the strut is approximately 920 K, using methane as the coolant. As intended, the methane formed a protective film around the strut, reducing heat transfer and strut temperature at thermal equilibrium.
