A new design for a printed circuit heat exchanger is proposed, and the thermal characteristics of the proposed design are evaluated using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes analysis. Further, the effect of overlapping the areas of the hot and cold channels on the thermal effectiveness in a conventional printed circuit heat exchanger is analyzed to investigate the usefulness of increasing the overlapping between channel areas. The proposed printed circuit heat exchanger is designed to maximize the overlapping area and to reduce the distance between the hot and cold channels. The four thermal performance parameters of the new design, namely, the Nusselt number, Colburn j-factor, thermal effectiveness, and net exergy gain, are evaluated and compared to a reference, which is a conventional printed circuit heat exchanger design. The proposed design shows remarkably higher thermal performance than the reference design.
