The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory has developed the latest variant of the Close-In Covert Autonomous Disposable Aircraft (CICADA) micro unmanned glider, the CICADA mk5. Navigation, guidance, and control systems have been developed for the CICADA mk5, which enable fully automatic flight launch to landing. Presented is the design of the navigation system, which estimates position, velocity, bias-corrected body-axis angular rate, roll attitude, wind speed, and wind direction using information from only a three-axis rate gyroscope and Global Positioning System receiver. The guidance system design presented enables tracking to a preprogrammed target location, orbiting that location, and performing a precision landing at that location. Controllers to regulate the roll attitude and flight path angle are presented. Included is the technique used to recover the CICADA mk5 from an inadvertent spin during aerial deployment. Flight test results are provided, which demonstrate the flight profiles of the CICADA mk5 during a nominal flight and precision landing.
