This work describes the development of the finite-element-based ablative and thermal response simulator (FEATS) in a two-dimensional axisymmetric framework for standard ablative materials subjected to high heat fluxes. Finite element method employing the Galerkin’s weighted residual method for energy and mass conservation system of a gas–solid mixture is used. Darcy’s relation serves as the gas momentum equation. Pyrolysis and surface recession due to thermal ablation is modeled by employing a contracting grid scheme. The validation of simulator for various one-dimensional cases is presented. Axisymmetric analysis is also presented to demonstrate the capability of simulator to deal with an irregular geometry.
