This paper details a method for comparatively testing the performance of thermal radiation barriers in vacuum. The proposed test method will be used to evaluate the performance of a variety of radiative barriers of interest to the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, including traditional and nontraditional forms of insulation. The design is intended to provide an open-source strategy for a simplified evaluation of radiative insulators. Employing a single-sided guarded hot-plate heat source, an effective thermal resistance R e can be established as a test metric to compare two or more insulators. A description of the motivational context and derivation of the method are given, including equations, requirements, and suggested test parameters.
